Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art CAP Highlights Exhibition Press Release

Established in 2005, the Chinese Art Prize (CAP) is one of the largest and most prestigious awards for Chinese contemporary art. The aim of the CAP is to encourage and promote emerging Chinese contemporary artists and give them the recognition and exposure that they deserve. Artists do not need ‘guanxi’ (connections), nor pay an entry fee to participate in the prize, making the CAP a truly fair and open competition. The CAP was founded and is organized by Art Scene China, with a variety of sponsors supporting the award.

Last year’s CAP had over 1300 artists’ entries. The members of the jury annually fly to Shanghai to judge the artists’ works “live” and then select the top 20 emerging Chinese artists for an exhibition at Art Scene China in Shanghai. The 20 CAP finalists are truly among the most outstanding emerging artists from throughout China, as they are selected by an internationally distinguished jury panel, according to their knowledge and experience of the art world.

Past CAP jury members include: Gerard Goodrow, Business Development, Phillips de Pury & Company, Germany (former Director of Art Cologne); Dr Marion Ackerman, Director of the Art Museum of Stuttgart, Germany; Isabelle de Wavrin, Co-Editor in Chief of Beaux-Arts, the top French art publication; Jeff Kelley, Curator of the Asian Art Museum in California, USA; Ami Barak, Curator of “Art for the World (The Expo)” - World Expo Shanghai 2010 and former Curator of Art Forum Berlin; Linel Rebenchuk, Director, Toronto International Art Fair (TIAF) and renowned contemporary artist Zhong Biao.

This retrospective of the CAP showcases the work of a variety of previous CAP finalists. In her mixed media compositions, Chen Jiao (CAP 2006 Gold prizewinner) argues that aesthetics, not science, constitutes the “real” empiricism; revealing the natural proportions and symmetry in natural and man-made structures. 2006 finalist Ye Hongxing celebrates the aesthetics of fusion in her quixotic portraits, blurring the boundaries between the particular and the composite. The conceptual works of vanguard artist Min Xiaofang (2008 Gold prizewinner) seek to challenge Chinese educational values via the uncanny reproduction of pages from old schoolbooks and tests. Whatever their subject persuasions, artistic styles and material preferences, these CAP artists represent the beacons of Chinese contemporary art; forever stretching its intellectual, aesthetic and technical boundaries.
